ASTYPALAIAN TRADITIONAL FEMALE DRESS

 Open doors, 19 Sep 2025 - 25 Sep 2025, Astypalaia, Greece

‘’MY FEELINGS AND THOUGHTS ABOUT ASTYPALAIA’S FEMALE LOCAL DRESS’’ When I look at the traditional female dress of Astypalaia, I feel admiration for our local history. In many islands of Hellas there are beautiful national costumes, like in Crete, Kalymnos, Naxos. In my opinion, Astypalaia’s is the most impressive one. Because it is a traditional dress, it makes us feel nostalgia about our past. I am proud of being an Astypalaian, because we have one of the most beautiful traditional dresses of the whole Hellas. This dress represents our customs and traditions. The embroidery of the dress is marvellous, having some special details: the bee symbolizes beauty, peace, past working habits and hard labour. As the lyrics of a tradional song of Astypalaia say, ‘’You have the sting of the wasp, the sweetness of the bee’’. We are honoured to have in our small island a museum where everybody can admire our embellished female traditional dress. I wish some day me, or a girl relative of mine, will be able to wear it !
