Lingo Quest: A European Language Scavenger Hunt!

Language classes, 26 Sep 2025, Curtea de Arges, Romania

Concept: This digital scavenger hunt celebrates the European Day of Languages by having students explore various European languages, their connections to English, and different cultures. It's designed to be interactive, collaborative, and discovery-based, perfect for English teaching classes involving almost 100 students from 9th to 12th highschool grade. The Quest: Students, working in small groups, will embark on a digital "Lingo Quest." They'll use online resources to complete challenges related to European languages, recording their findings. Examples of Quest Cards: 1. "Word Detective": Find five English words that come directly from French (e.g., ballet, café, rendezvous). What do they mean in French? 2. "Greeting Globalizer": Learn how to say "Hello" and "Thank You" in three different European languages (e.g., German, Spanish, Polish). 3. "Cognate Explorer": Identify three words that are similar in English and Italian (e.g., pizza, music, television). Are their meanings identical? 4. "Cultural Clue": Research a famous cultural tradition or food item from a European country (e.g., Oktoberfest in Germany, paella in Spain) and learn one key word associated with it in its original language. 5. "Sound Safari": Listen to a short audio clip of a conversation in a European language (provided via a link). Can you identify what language it is? What clues helped you?
