The Tree of Nations and Languages

Language Day, 26 sep 2025, Ανώγεια, Grekland

On the occasion of the European Day of Languages, our kindergarten organized a hands-on activity to explore the languages and cultures of Europe (and beyond). At first, the children listened to greetings and simple words from different countries. Through listening and imitation games, they tried to repeat the sounds, laughing and enjoying the idea of “speaking” like children from other places. We then focused on the word “hello,” which we searched for and recognized in many different languages. The children were fascinated to discover how the same idea – a greeting – can be expressed in so many different ways. As the highlight of the activity, we decided to create together a large poster titled “The Tree of Nations and Languages.” On its branches we wrote the word “hello” in various languages, while on its roots we drew and added values that unite us: cooperation, acceptance, peace, joy, friendship, respect, love. In this way, our tree symbolized that, although we speak different languages, we share common values that keep us connected. The activity concluded with a meaningful discussion about how important it is to know and respect the languages and traditions of others, and we closed with singing and dancing that filled the children with joy. Finally, we ensured dissemination: we presented the poster and shared photos of the activity with parents, while a related post was also published on the school blog so that the entire school community could share in our little journey through the languages of the world.
