Building Linguistic Bridges

 Language Day, 26 MFómh 2025 - 26 MFómh 2025, Argalasti, Greece

High School A&B: Inspired by the motto "Sprachen öffnen Herz und Geist" (Languages open hearts and minds), the students reflected on the importance of language learning, exchanged views on the role of language in connecting the mind and the heart, and finally composed their own poems on the subject in German and decorated them with symbolic drawings. Parallel activity 1: The students searched for Greek words used in widely spoken languages around the world, such as English and German, but also in Albanian, which is the mother tongue of many of our students. Parallel activity 2: Divided into groups, the students were asked to answer a 20-question online quiz in which they had to identify the origin of words from European languages that have been incorporated as loanwords into everyday communication. They then tried to find the corresponding Greek word for each one. This was followed by an extensive discussion focusing on the importance of language, as well as globalization and the role of technology in our linguistic development. High school C: The students watched a multimedia PowerPoint presentation on untranslatable/'unique' words from various languages around the world, discussed their meaning, interpreted their necessity, and evaluated their ingenuity and effectiveness. Then, they searched for words with similar meanings in Greek, identified major or minor differences, and finally tried to identify Greek words that would be difficult to define in our language and even more difficult to translate into another language, e.g. "philotimo." Parallel activity: The students created a brochure with the word "peace" in many languages and included in it the poem by Greek poet G. Ritsos "Peace," as well as its translation into Albanian, with the help of their bilingual classmates.
