Dathlwch Ddiwrnod Ieithoedd Ewrop gyda ni!

2025: Languages open hearts and minds!

Ledled Ewrop, anogir 700 miliwn o Ewropeaid a gynrychiolir gan 46 o aelod-wladwriaethau Cyngor Ewrop i ddysgu mwy o ieithoedd, beth bynnag eu hoedran, yn yr ysgol a thu hwnt. Mae Cyngor Ewrop yn argyhoeddedig bod amrywiaeth ieithyddol yn ffordd o sicrhau gwell dealltwriaeth ryngddiwylliannol, ac yn elfen allweddol o dreftadaeth ddiwylliannol gyfoethog ein cyfandir. Felly, mae Cyngor Ewrop yn Strasbourg hyrwyddo amlieithedd dros Ewrop gyfan.
Drwy fenter Cyngor Ewrop, rydyn ni wedi dathlu Diwrnod Ieithoedd Ewrop ar 26 Medi bob blwyddyn ers 2001.

Initiative 2025: Languages open hearts and minds!

Create a poster illustrating the 25th anniversary motto of the European Day of Languages “Languages open hearts and minds!”. This reflects that learning languages harnesses both the emotions and the brain. As well as potentially boosting brain power and connecting people, learning languages can facilitate the exchange of ideas, emotions, and experiences – strengthening empathy and respect for different ways of life.

You can use symbols, quotes and artwork to convey messages and let your creativity run wild!

Send us an image (jpg or gif) of the poster you produce to be showcased on the EDL website. There will be prizes for the top 5 most creative entries and 25 of the posters will proudly be displayed at the premises of the European Centre for Modern Languages!

The last day for submissions is 15 October 2025.

Initiative 2025: An anthem for the European Day of Languages!

Help to create (and perform) a multilingual anthem for the 25th anniversary of the European Day of Languages!

With the help of artificial intelligence we have generated the text of a song in English entitled ‘Voices of Europe’ (see below).

We now invite schools, organisations, associations and, of course, other language enthusiasts to make it a truly multilingual work by translating it to your own language!

For the initiative we invite videos of the resulting anthem being performed as well as the song text in the language used for the performance — a truly multilingual version of the song will be developed from the submissions!

Who knows, maybe we will end up with a chart-topping hit on our hands!

Deadline for submissions: 15 October 2025

A Motivation Manifesto

A starting point for learning any language is to have the motivation and commitment to do so! The Motivation Manifesto, developed by a joint ECML-European Commission working group, highlights why language learning is important and how motivation plays such a significant role in the learning process. It also identifies the key actors and factors that influence motivation in the context of language learning.

Word of the year

Every year, countries throughout Europe participate in the tradition of selecting a "word of the year." This practice involves choosing a single word or phrase that reflects the social, cultural, or political trends and events of the year. The word of the year serves as a symbolic representation of the collective consciousness and prevailing themes within a society. It captures the zeitgeist and becomes a reflection of the shared experiences, concerns, and aspirations of the people.

Event of the day

One day · Une journée · Un día · Ein Tag... for languages!

 Celebration, 26 Medi 2025 - 26 Medi 2025, Caltagirone, Italy

* * * * * * * Secusio High School celebrates the Day of Languages with a rich program of activities planned to underline the importance of studying foreign languages as a tool for personal growth, cultural openness, and international dialogue. The day will begin with musical performances in English, French, Spanish, and German, highlighting the power of music as a universal language. Among the scheduled initiatives is a theatrical performance entitled "1948 – Universal Declaration of Human Rights: Rights Proclaimed, Lives Broken", performed by students in the four languages studied, along with Italian, to reaffirm the value of mutual understanding and fundamental rights and stress the contradictions of contemporary society. Students will then participate in a fun and interactive educational test designed to stimulate their knowledge of foreign languages and cultures. The morning will be enriched by short presentations on the importance of languages, with testimonials from former students, and presentations related to the French-language theatre festival, language certification courses, study trips, and twinning projects. A special moment will be dedicated to the award ceremony for students who have achieved the Cambridge English Language Certificate, in recognition of their commitment and success in learning English. Finally, the announcement of the foreign language writing competition, titled "Ctrl+Umano: Humans, Humains, Humanos, Menschen... REACT!", will be presented. This will offer students the opportunity to express themselves creatively and discuss a highly topical issue. A day to experience languages, share their richness, and discover new perspectives for growth and the future. View event

Quote of the day:

I have nothing to declare but my genius!

By Oscar Wilde
Oscar Wilde was not known for his modesty! This is, reputedly, Wilde's response to an offical who asked him if he had anything to declare at a customs control in New York in 1882.

Questions you never dared to ask about languages

For this year’s European Day of Languages we have produced a series of short video clips focusing on ‘Questions you never dared to ask about languages’ with experts covering a range of backgrounds and specialisations responding.
As the title suggests, the questions are ones that we might not wish to ask in front of an audience but, in fact, highlight important issues and address some popular misconceptions about languages and language learning. Do you have a question you would like to ask an expert?

To see subtitles on the videos, please activate this feature by clicking on ‘subtitles’ in the YouTube menu below the video. To change languages, click on the gear wheel and select subtitles>’automatically translate’ and select the desired language (the machine translation is provided by YouTube).
